It is generally safe for a baby to travel in a car seat, but there are important guidelines and precautions to follow :
Limit Continuous Travel Time: Babies should not be in a car seat for more than 2 hours at a time. Prolonged periods can lead to restricted airways, which may cause breathing problems.
Before setting out on a trip, ensure your infant’s car seat is correctly installed. Carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions that came with the seat. The car seat should be rear-facing and set at the appropriate angle.
Properly following the installation angle guidelines prevents your baby’s head from slumping forward, which could block their airway. Avoid the chin-to-chest position. Additionally, make sure the five-point harness system is properly adjusted and fits snugly around your baby while in the car.
Take Regular Breaks: Plan to take breaks every 1.5 to 2 hours. Use these breaks to take your baby out of the car seat, hold them, and allow them to stretch.
When traveling, babies can safely sleep in a properly installed car seat. These seats are designed to protect babies in the event of a crash and to maintain safe sleep positions if they fall asleep.
However, car seats are not suitable for long periods of sleep when the baby is not being closely monitored. They should also not be used as a safe sleeping spot for the baby outside the car.
Supervision: An adult should always be present to keep an eye on the baby while travelling. Never leave a baby unattended in a car seat, especially in a vehicle.
It’s crucial for both you and your baby to get out of the car every few hours to stretch and avoid restlessness. Aim for a break every 2 to 3 hours during the day and every 4 to 6 hours at night for diaper changes, feeding, or changing soiled clothes. Never attempt to breastfeed while the car is moving.
Before setting off, plan your route and identify gas stations and rest stops along the way. If you think you might need a longer break, it’s helpful to know where baby-friendly hotels are located. If you’re unsure about the availability of a safe sleep space at your destination, bring along a bassinet or portable play yard, as it’s unsafe for your baby to sleep in the car seat once you’ve arrived.
Keep Essentials Close By
Pack a diaper bag or cooler for the back seat so you have essential items within reach. Include:
- Extra diapers, wipes, diaper cream, changing pad, clothes, garbage bags for diaper disposal, and hand sanitizer.
- Formula or breast milk kept on ice or in a cooling bag, along with bibs.
- Pacifiers, a favorite soothing toy, books, and a device to play music for entertainment.
- A thermometer.
Also, have snacks and water easily accessible for yourself. If you need to stop for a coffee to go, never leave your baby unattended in the car, even for a brief moment. Children can suffer from heat stroke very quickly in hot cars.
Comfort: Ensure the baby is dressed comfortably and not too tightly, and that they are not too hot or cold.
- Hydration and Feeding: Make sure to feed and hydrate your baby during breaks, as needed.
If you have any specific concerns or if your baby has health issues, it’s always best to consult with your pediatrician before a long car trip.
Plan your travel around your baby’s schedule. For shorter trips, consider leaving early in the morning when your baby is still sleeping or during their regular nap times. For longer journeys, driving at night when your baby is typically asleep can help ensure a smoother trip.
Be prepared for things to go off course. Traveling with an infant can be challenging, so it’s essential to stay flexible and not get too stressed if plans change. Remember the positives: traveling by car lets you take breaks whenever you need and follow your own schedule.
